While Bastian Bux, Atreyu and the creatures of The Neverending Story are unlikely to ever attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, it’s still fun to speculate which House each character might end up in. Atreyu might be braver than all three of the trio members combined, and Luna Lovegood would likely have some incredible conversations with Engywook the scientist.

Like any other characters, each member of the Neverending Story cast is likely to fall into multiple Houses on technicalities, but they would also learn to foster their talents well under a single House, whether it be Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Gryffindor or Slytherin.

Atreyu: Gryffindor

There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that the warrior of the plains people is a Gryffindor. Atreyu seems fearless at times, and even when he has fear he still charges in and demands to know what he has to do to save the day, whether it’s brave the Swamp of Sadness, face the Southern Oracle or take on Gmork, the servant of The Nothing.

Atreyu would be an asset to any adventure the trio embark upon, but he might not be wise enough to pause and think first like Hermione. When facing Dementors, he’d likely conjure a beautiful steed similar to Artax.

Bastian: Ravenclaw

While Bastian has qualities that could place him into several different Houses, he would fit best in Ravenclaw, where his imagination and love for books would be fostered. Bastian has trouble keeping his feet on the ground and often lives in his own mind alone, which is common for many thinkers and dreamers. He can be quite logical, and although he does avoid his math test, it’s while grieving the loss of his mother.

Bastian’s father is even more logical, pressing his son to “get the old job done” even while grieving, and given that families often fall into the same Hogwarts House, he’d likely be a Ravenclaw as well.

Rockbiter: Hufflepuff

The Rockbiter is an incredibly loyal friend, even to those he’s only just met, placing him in the Hufflepuff House. He’s honest to a fault, and he’s so open and earnest that even if he’s annoying, as when the Night Hob finds him, you still can’t help but love Rockbiter on some level.

Rockbiter isn’t about to win any intelligence contests and he certainly isn’t a sly fox, but he’s brave enough for the Sorting Hat to pause and consider Gryffindor. Still, his steadfast commitment to his friends, even while forgoing his own safety, and his desire to use his strength to save them makes him a true Hufflepuff at heart.

Gmork: Slytherin

If there’s any character that falls 100% into a certain Hogwarts House, it’s the tricky wolf and servant of The Nothing, Gmork. Gmork is only after his own dark goals, serving The Nothing much like many Slytherins serve the Dark Lord.

While Gmork isn’t as threatening as many modern beasts, he’s still scarier than the Twilight werewolves and despite how quickly his fight with Atreyu went, he also tracked this warrior down throughout the entire film, relentlessly pursuing him. Gmork’s ambition and drive to achieve his goals, no matter how brutal the means may be, would land him in the Slytherin House.

Engywook: Ravenclaw

Engywook is an obvious Ravenclaw, not only because he is all about all things science, but because he doesn’t actually have qualities befitting any of the other Hogwarts Houses. Sure, he’s a bit devious when it comes to observing the Southern Oracle and using others for his research, and he’s ambitious enough to want to be known for his work, but ultimately it’s the work itself that drives him.

Of all the characters in The Neverending Story, Engywook would be the most likely to make friends with Luna Lovegood, and the two would have fascinating conversations with one another about various creatures.

Night Hob: Slytherin

The Night Hob isn’t deceitful or conniving, but neither are many Slytherins. What he is about, however, is his own self-interest, and really, isn’t everyone to an extent? Night Hob is a cranky creature, but he’s definitely interested in getting the Empress’ assistance in saving his people in the south, himself in particular, from The Nothing.

Night Hob is quick to criticize and make fun of everyone from the Rockbiter, whom he calls “a nutcase,” and his own “stupid bat,” but he’s also an astute creature who quickly realizes how fast The Nothing is spreading. He would do well in the Slytherin House, where he’d be able to hold his own.

Teeny Weeny: Gryffindor

Like many of the most interesting characters introduced in The Neverending Story, Deep Roy’s character Teeny Weeny doesn’t get enough time on screen, but in the moments he’s there, he is one of the bravest citizens of Fantasia. He rides a racing snail, which takes courage, especially when you see how fast the snail travels.

Teeny Weeny also seems more excited about getting answers about The Nothing than anyone else, crying out, “What are we waiting for?!” It’s a very Gryffindor moment in the film, and it makes it clear that Teeny Weeny would be up for an adventure if he were placed in the wizarding world of Harry Potter.

Falkor: Hufflepuff

While Falkor is courageous and bright, he’s also the most loyal companion that Atreyu has throughout his journey. He is even more loyal than poor Artax, who succumbed to the Swamp of Sadness. Falkor never gave up, even when it seemed as if all of Fantasia was lost forever.

Falkor seems like he may have Gryffindor qualities when chasing down bullies or braving The Nothing, but his motto, “Never give up and good luck will find you!” rings more of a Hufflepuff’s good nature. He’s also friendly and patient with everyone, even Urgl, who tries to give him shots of vitamins.

Childlike Empress: Ravenclaw

Although fans of the book might argue that the Childlike Empress is a Slytherin — and they would be right if we’re going by strictly her presence in the film — she is a thoughtful Ravenclaw who provides enigmatic clues to solve, even though she’s battling a terrible illness. The empress has known she’s needed a new name all along, and she cryptically spells it out for Bastian before he realizes what he has to do to save all of Fantasia.

As an empress, she should be a wise ruler to begin with, and Professor Flitwick’s tutelage in the Ravenclaw House would surely serve her well.

Urgl: Slytherin

She’s kind and loyal like a Hufflepuff, but between her insults, attitude and potions aptitude, Urgl would fit well within the Slytherin House. Urgl doesn’t give a single care about what anyone else wants. Her own goals are of utmost importance to her, even when they include making other people well. She knows better, or so she thinks, and what she says goes.

Urgl plays around with tree mold, eye of newt, scales from a rancid sea serpent and lizard brains, among other ingredients a Slytherin would be comfortable using, and it doesn’t even phase her. In fact, Urgl might give Professor Snape a run for his money.
