Crazy Rich Asians is a romantic comedy that was released in 2018 and is based on a novel by the same name. The movie follows a woman named Rachel whose boyfriend invites her to Singapore for a wedding, only to find herself in the spotlight because of his family’s surprising wealth and fame there. This movie became popular because of the fact that it was the first Hollywood feature film to feature a large cast of Asian-American leads in quite some time.
But, aside from the important diversity on display in this movie, the film was also popular among people that love a fun, romantic comedy and, of course, people who wanted to see the lavish lifestyles of these characters on display. The word “rich” in the title is definitely not an exaggeration, either. The characters in this movie have serious money and they’re not afraid to flaunt it with the clothes they wear.
Astrid’s Dior Shopping Dress
Astrid Leong is one of the socialites featured in Crazy Rich Asians and is portrayed in the film by Gemma Chan. Astrid is known in both the novel and the film for her stunning beauty and all eyes are definitely on her as soon as she enters a room. Astrid definitely fits in with the other characters since she’s so well-dressed and the costume designers made a lot of Astrid’s clothes more sophisticated and simple, but far from boring.
This outfit is one that Astrid wore to go shopping and she looked totally amazing. In this scene, Astrid wore a simple, baby pink dress from Dior and paired it with a classic Lady Dior bag and pair of Dior sunglasses.
Rachel’s Little Red Dress
As far as the outfits in Crazy Rich Asians go, Rachel’s red dress in this scene was fairly toned down and basic. It wasn’t crazily embellished or a total show-stopper because of its intricate details, but that definitely worked for this character.
Rachel was supposed to be an outsider in the world of all these Singapore socialites and having her dressed in a fairly simple little red dress emphasized that. The back of the dress has some cut-out details that bring a lot of interest to the outfit.
All White On Nick
Even though most of the jaw-dropping fashion that really got our attention in this movie was on the ladies of the film, we’ve got to give some love to Nick’s sense of style, too! Considering he’s surrounded by so many well-dressed people in his family’s inner circle, it’s no surprise that he knows how to dress, too.
In this scene, he simply wore a cream-colored suit with a white shirt underneath. Even though it’s definitely a lot less flashy than some of what Astrid, Rachel, and Araminta wear throughout the film, it’s hard to deny that Nick looked pretty good in all white.
Rachel’s Rejected Michael Kors Makeover
Even though Rachel isn’t shown as being as interested in fashion as some of the other characters in the movie, she wears quite a few awesome outfits. During one scene, she’s given a total makeover and is given a few different things to try on. This sparkly Michael Kors dress didn’t make the cut for Rachel’s wedding look, we can’t take our eyes off it!
This isn’t the only time that Michael Kors clothing makes an appearance in this film. Crazy Rich Asians costume designer used a variety of designers throughout the film and Michael Kors was also the designer that made that fabulous faux fur jacket that Celine Lim wore.
Araminta’s Wedding Dress
There’s a reason people were flying to Singapore from all over the globe for Araminta’s wedding. As Rachel found out, it was truly the area’s social event of the year - or even maybe the decade! - and the bride did not disappoint when it was time for her to walk down the aisle.
Amarinta walked down the aisle barefoot on water and flowers in this tiered, gold dress and looked absolutely ethereal. Even though there were a lot of amazing outfits in the movie, this dress stole the show and became the absolute favorite for many moviegoers.
Rachel’s Ethereal Blue Look
Rachel definitely knows how to make an entrance. She walked into Araminta’s wedding looking like she just stepped right out of a Disney movie in this ruffly blue Marchesa dress. Even though Rachel was going through a lot in the movie, this light blue dress’ calming blue color definitely channeled a more relaxing vibe and she didn’t have a hair out of place under that glittery hairpiece, despite everything that was going on in her mind.
Amarinta’s wedding was a beautiful event all-around. From the decor to Amarinta’s dress and the outfits of everyone in attendance, it was easy for viewers to see why this was such a massive event for the social scene in Singapore.
Casual But Chic
In a movie with so many designer gowns, it’s definitely surprising that such a casual outfit could be considered one of the best in the film. But Rachel was a really interesting character and the fact that she managed to look so chic in the airport in this casual look is not a surprise!
Rachel managed to make a busy travel day look so stylish with this striped top and dark denim jacket. That simple black choker is definitely not a piece of statement jewelry, but it’s so stylish and looks so good with her outfit that it pulls the whole thing together.
Stella McCartney’s New Take On Animal Print
In Crazy Rich Asians, Awkwafina played the role of Peik Lin, the wild and out there fashionista that becomes a good friend to Rachel and helps her to navigate the world of Singapore’s elite. This character is a hilarious one for viewers and a helpful one for Rachel and she wore some totally wacky clothes.
These wacky outfits really spoke to her as a character and showcased her loud, funny personality. One of the best outfits that Peik Lin wore in the movie was this matching two-piece outfit from Stella McCartney that puts a new spin of “animal print” with the dog pattern all over it.
Araminta’s Jumpsuit
Araminta is one of the central characters in Crazy Rich Asians because it’s her wedding that is pulling people from all over the world to Singapore. The looks she sported at her wedding and reception may have been definite showstoppers, but we can’t forget about some of Amarinta’s other incredible outfits.
Amarinta’s jumpsuit was covered in gold sequins and sparkled with every step she took. It was designed by Mary E. Vogt and created by Malaysian couture designer Carven Ong. It’s pretty fitting considering we know that Amarinta would never wear something that wasn’t totally custom and couture.
Rachel’s Fresh Pink Dress
Meeting your significant other’s family can be stressful! This is especially true when you know that they’re incredibly wealthy and well-known where they live. Rachel was definitely feeling nervous, but she didn’t show it in this feminine, floral dress.
The tones of pink and the adorable ruffles down the front give this dress such a feminine and lighthearted feeling, perfect for a trip to meet your boyfriend’s grandmother. It may not be the flashiest or fanciest outfit featured in the movie, but it’s perfect for Rachel’s personality and the scene it appeared in.
