Men In Black

We start off our list with an unforgettable 90’s blockbuster hit, Men In Black. The movie sees Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith act as extraterrestrial regulators who protect the Earth and its denizens (both humans and aliens) from other-worldly threats.

After doing some digging from other close encounters, they quickly discover an assassination plot centered around two ambassadors from different galaxies who made a home in New York. The movie is loosely based on the short-running comic series sharing the name, and its popularity saw the birth of many sequels. It’s current IMDb rating sits at 7.3 out of 10.

Equilibrium

Christian Bale takes the role of Clerick John Preston, a top government agent that helps his agency suppress emotions and their ways of expression in the action-packed Equilibrium.

Products like books, art, and poetry are all outlawed and anyone who opposes the rule is met with death. After serving for some time, John beings to resist the oppression of his agency. This leads to him reject his scheduled dose of the drug Prozium; a drug designed to block emotions. With his sense of morality starting to come back to him, John quickly sets plans in motion to overthrow his current government. IMDB ranks the movie a 7.4 out of 10

The Cloverfield Paradox

The third entry in the Cloverfield franchise, this movie saw mixed reviews when it initially hit theaters. The plot centers around a group of scientist that orbit an Earth going environmentally catastrophic events. To help curb these events, the scientists were sent up to test a device that would potentially give Earth unlimited power.

The results were somewhat in the realm of what they were hoping for, with unlimited power being possible, but a much darker form of reality creeping out into our own. You won’t find any huge, scary monsters in this film much like you would its predecessors; IMDb rates the movie at a harsh 5.5 out of 10.

Transcendence

Johnny Depp isn’t a stranger to science fiction, and his role in Transcendence as the antagonist was a step up from his normal gigs.  Depp plays Dr. Will Caster, who is a renown expert on Artifical Intelligence and is seen as the go-to guy by many in his industry.

After a near-fatal assassination attempt from extremists, his plans of assimilating himself with machines only kicked off faster. Caster’s friends and loved ones are forced to watch him slowly become more machine, and start to realize there’s nothing they can do to stop him. This isn’t one of Depp’s best movies, and it sits at a passable 6.3 out of 10 on IMDb

Circle

If you’re a fan of The Purge movies or The Belko Experiment, then this title might be right up your ally. Imagine waking up in a circular room with 50 other people, and no recollection of how you got there. Not a fun thought, huh? Now add into the mix you have to choose only ONE of the 50 people to live.

Strangers start to die every few minutes, and once the remainder of the group quickly realize they have the say-so on who lives and dies, decisions get made based on principles. It’s a solid sci-fi movie, with IMDb ranking it at 6 out of 10

Chappie

If you’re a fan of District 9 or Elysium, then we have no doubt you’ll enjoy this movie. The plot revolves around new advancements in the police force, with many of the law-breakers being dealt with mechanized officers. One of the officers is stolen and undergoes reprogramming that allows him to think and act for himself.

This quickly catches the attention of the police force he came from, and they soon set out to make sure nothing else like him ever surfaces again. It can get emotional and IMDb ranks the movie at 6.8 out of 10.

Cloud Atlas

Cloud Atlas brings out some serious acting chops from Tom Hanks and Halle Berry. The movie spans over five centuries with the actors popping up in different roles throughout.

It starts out with an attorney helps a slave coming from the Pacific Voyage in 1849, before we see a very poor music composer face problems with his magnum opus during WWII. The last jump takes us to 2144, where we see genetically engineered worker introduced to forbidden aspects of human consciousness. With each timeline the main characters find each other. Cloud Atlas is a movie worth watching, with its IMDb score sitting at 7.4 out of 10.

Ex Machina

Fans of A.I movies have something to drool over. Ex Machina tells the story of a young programmer that works in one of the hugest internet companies. When he wins a contest that allows him to meet and hang out with his companies genius CEO, Nathan Bateman, he soon learns that he was specifically chosen to test out the capabilities of a new A.I system named Ava.

One that would act and talk just like a human. It starts off sweet, with everything seeming to promise a smooth run before Ava’s manipulative abilities are brought to light.

9

This is an animated movie where 9 (Elijah Wood) is one of the few benign, sentient objects left after humanity is wiped out. The only living things aside from the dolls like 9 are the machines that hunt them down, and a small band of humans.

9 is the youngest of his group but persuades them that going into the offensive is the best method of survival. They aren’t open to this at first, but they soon begin to realize that the remaining civilizations depend on how they react to the machines.

Welcome To Willits

This movie somehow found a way to group up meth addicts, pot farmers, and conspiracy theorists, so don’t expect a life-changing plot here. The movie is centered on a group of teens that set up camp without realizing that they’re on the property of Wittlits most disturbed resident.

The man is known for being a psychotic, drug-addicted pot farmer with a strong belief in extraterrestrial life, and a tendency to go overboard. While it presents itself as a somewhat serious sci-fi movie, we can’t help but see it as comedic with just the insane plotline alone.
