The sequel trilogy is now at an end. From The Force Awakens through The Last Jedi to the here and now with The Rise of Skywalker, the new Disney trilogy of Star Wars has been an emotional, if not completely wild ride.

The film’s quality may be argued about by some, but the very least that can be said about them is that they are massively fun, and to a lot of people pretty fantastic. One thing that has rung true about the trilogy though is that there has been no coherent plan, and because of this a lot of subplots have remained unresolved. Here are 10 subplots from the new Star Wars trilogy that went nowhere.

BROOM KID

The Last Jedi introduced fans to Canto Bight and subsequently a group of slave children working in the stables of the city. One such slave makes an appearance in the last scene of the film in his quarters and seemingly uses the Force to pull a broom towards him.

Fans speculated that perhaps Rey would find the aptly coined Broom Kid and perhaps have him be a part of her rebuilding of the new Jedi order. Alas, The Rise of Skywalker came with absolutely no acknowledgment of Broom Kid’s existence.

CANTO BIGHT

Speaking of Canto Bight, what an utter waste. Finn and Poe go there in The Last Jedi to find a master codebreaker but end up getting arrested, freeing a load of Faithiers, as well as not hiring the master codebreaker and, instead, hiring a crook codebreaker.

Canto Bight is a beautiful and interesting place that is by no means a bad place for the narrative to use. However, the story ended up being pointless, serving only to show Finn that both the Resistance and the First Order buy weapons. A waste of Finn, of Rose, of Canto Bight and a waste of a big chunk of an otherwise great movie.

LUKE’S JEDI ACADEMY

Other than the fact that Ben trained there, Leia may have done some training there, and it is burned to smithereens, we know nothing really about Luke’s Jedi academy and temple.

The new Kylo Ren comic series reveals that it was the Knights of Ren (with no help from Kylo) who burned down the temple, but this information would have been good in the films for the Knights of Ren’s story and Luke’s temple. Temple flashbacks are seen in both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, it seemed that true explanation and context was needed sooner or later, but it never came.

SNOKE’S STORY

Snoke had every bit of potential to be one of the best Star Wars villains of all time had he been used right. He had the intrigue, the power, the control, the intimidation, and the spectacular work of Andy Serkis. Unfortunately, it was all a bit of a waste.

Snoke started as the main villain of the trilogy. Then, he died and became a subplot, a part of Kylo’s story, which would have been great if a smart, logical, and satisfying telling of his story had been given to fans. Unfortunately, Snoke’s entire existence meant nothing as he was merely a creation of Palpatine. The story of Snoke was sort of resolved, but it did not go anywhere other than his death and worthlessness - especially since it looks like Palpatine was making more of him - and overall it was an absolute waste.

NEARLY EVERYTHING TO DO WITH PALPATINE

In the end, Palpatine was revealed as the central villain of The Rise Of Skywalker and the sequel trilogy. Initially, this was fantastic. It seemed like Disney had swindled us and had this plan all along. It became quickly evident this was not the case.

We know two things about Palpatine for sure in the film, he is alive and he is evil. How is he alive? We do not know. How long has he been creating the Final Order? We do not know. With whom, and when does Palpatine have a child? We do not know. Educated guesses can be made about all these things and the many more questions surrounding Palpatine. But, ultimately, he was shoehorned and wasted, as fun as it was seeing him, his story went nowhere.

WHAT WAS FINN TRYING TO TELL REY

For a portion of The Rise Of Skywalker, Rey and Finn’s relationship is pretty undefined. There has always been clear chemistry between them and it seemed like there are feelings there, although Finn would probably be battling for Rey’s affection with Kylo. The film teases that Finn was going to tell Rey in the film he loved her. But, the movie never tells.

Numerous times, Finn tells Rey he has something to tell her. At first, it seemed like he was going to profess his love. But, later fans are subject to very on the nose hints that Finn is Force-sensitive, so perhaps that is what he was going to tell her. Either way, the audience never finds out. It was later revealed by J. J. that Finn indeed was going to tell her that he was Force-sensitive, but in the bubble of the movies, the plot went nowhere. With a whole subplot of finding a thing, to get a thing, to get to a place, you’d think they could fit Finn’s line in.

FINN & ROSE

Speaking of potential romances, The Rise Of Skywalker not only failed to answer the question of what happened with Finn and Rose but ignored the romance and Rose completely.

In The Last Jedi, the pair share a romantic kiss and while it is not on the good end of Star Wars romances, it happened. In The Rise of Skywalker though the two do not even interact, save for one fleeting moment.

MAZ KANATA AND HER POSSESSION OF LUKE’S LIGHTSABER

The Force Awakens introduces fans to the delightful and intriguing Maz Kanata. Not much is told about her except that she is very old, and has some sort of understanding of the Force. She is also in possession of Anakin Skywalker’s, later Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber and gives it to Rey.

For one, Maz is completely neglected in The Last Jedi and its quite the crime, by the time The Rise Of Skywalker comes round there is no real space to fit her story in. For two, wherein the twin suns did she get that lightsaber? The last we saw of it it was falling alongside Luke’s hand on Cloud City. It is never explained, nobody even wonders about it in the film, not even Luke. Making Maz and the intrigue surrounding her, all worthless.

REY AND KYLO DESTROYING THE LIGHTSABER

Another pointless subplot about Luke’s lightsaber is how, after Kylo and Rey destroy the blade in The Last Jedi, Rey has it to use in The Rise Of Skywalker.

The question is answered in The Rise Of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary which says Rey used the Jedi texts to repair it between the films. Nonetheless, though, it seems like a waste of what Rian Johnson was trying to achieve with the destruction of Luke’s Saber. Rey creates her own Lightsaber in the end anyway and it looks fantastic, why not just have her use that instead of Luke’s? In any case, the saber’s reconstruction goes unexplained in the films, and without research (which should not be needed) fans would be left not knowing what happened with it.

THE KNIGHTS OF REN

The Knights Of Ren had so much potential and it was all wasted. The Force Awakens set up their story, however, The Last Jedi did not continue it, and The Rise Of Skywalker continued their story awfully.

We do not know who they are nor who they are loyal too since they turn on Kylo as soon as he is redeemed. We do not know where they came from, what their purpose is, are they Force users, mercenaries, stormtroopers? Their story went nowhere and is one of the trilogy’s biggest disappointments.
