Before Avengers: Endgame’s release, it seemed that interest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe might wane a little afterward. After all, the 22nd film’s release draws the overarching series to a close. However, this gravy train isn’t about to stop running. Spider-Man: Far From Home is going to be a defining movie for Marvel Studios too, partly because of everything that happened during Endgame.
Hopes are sky-high for this next Spidey adventure, as we wait to see what’s in store for the MCU next. It’s not all guesswork, though, because Avengers: Endgame’s events provided us with several hints about Spider-Man: Far From Home will feature. In terms of the story and the thematic style, we were given quite a lot to go on. Watch out, though, because there’ll be Endgame spoilers below.
All Of Peter’s Classmates Were Victims Of The Thanos Snap
We can expect quite a bit of angst coming our way in this film, seeing as all of Peter’s classmates (at least the ones who are important to the plot) got snapped by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Why can we assume that? Well, because they’re all in school still, yet the film is set years after Spider-Man: Homecoming.
As such, there should be a lot of talk about everything that happened in Infinity War and Endgame. It’ll also be interesting to see if anyone addresses the very unlikely possibility that almost all of Peter’s classmates got snapped away, even though Thanos took out 50% of the people.
It Will Address The Events Of Avengers: Endgame
The film takes place directly after the ending of Avengers: Endgame, as we saw Peter meet with Ned Leeds at his school. The story can’t leap forward any more than a few months, as Peter’s supposed to be going to Europe for vacation with the class.
Now that Iron Man Captain America, Thor and many other heroes are gone, it leaves Spider-Man as the go-to hero for the kids in Peter’s class. The battle against Thanos happened out in the open, so Spider-Man’s involvement should be common knowledge. This is bound to be addressed by the characters in the film. Perhaps Spidey’s become a celebrity now?
It Will Be The Finale Of The Infinity Saga
Kevin Feige revealed that Spider-Man: Far From Home will be the final film in Phase Three of the Infinity Saga. While Ant-Man wasn’t really significant as the final movie of Phase Two, this film will most certainly act as an epilogue.
Avengers: Endgame left too much up for interpretation. We don’t know whether the Avengers are still active or not, or what happened to the people who were revived from the original snap. Far From Home will show us how the world’s working now, the reintegration of the people back into society. The Infinity Saga’s story will be brought full circle with this film.
It Won’t Feature Iron Man
It’s bittersweet, with Iron Man’s story being given such a fitting finale, but Spider-Man: Far From Home will not feature Pete’s mentor, Tony Stark. He was one of the crucial supporting characters in Spider-Man: Homecoming, so it’ll be a change of pace not to have him along for this ride.
With his death having occurred so recently, there is zero chance we see Iron Man being resurrected in any shape or form. It’s possible that he’ll appear in a flashback or a dream sequence, but even that’s quite unlikely. After all, if we dwell too much, it’ll take away the impact of Iron Man’s absence.
Peter Parker Will Greatly Mature
The one thing we knew throughout Spider-Man: Homecoming was that Peter was never truly was in danger because he had friends in high places. Peter really was just the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, as Iron Man was looking out for things at large.
This time around, Peter’s story will unquestionably see him mature into a hero in his own right. He doesn’t have his watchful protector anymore, which means he’ll have to grow up now. Harsh reality ensued for Peter in Avengers: Endgame and Far From Home will be a story of self-discovery for Spider-Man. He’ll have to believe in himself to pull through.
Nick Fury Is Looking For New Avengers
Nick Fury’s single-second shot in Avengers: Endgame made it clear that Marvel was saving him up for this film. As it’ll be the last film in the Infinity Saga, it’s fitting that Nick Fury’s approached a fresh hero to join his plans.
The first Iron Man film saw Fury approach Tony in a similar way, and now it’ll be his protegé’s turn to take up the hero responsibility. We know that the Elementals are supposed to be the antagonists, but there should be a bigger picture in Fury’s mind: recruiting Spider-Man as part of the next iteration of the Avengers.
Happy Hogan Will Be Peter’s New Support
Happy Hogan got basically no promotion for Spider-Man: Homecoming, back when Iron Man was front and center for the film’s marketing. In contrast, you’ll have noticed he’s been much more prominent in trailers for Spider-Man: Far From Home. Another thing that’s been apparent is that Happy’s been a lot nicer to Peter, a stark contrast to how badly he treated him in the previous film.
As Happy vowed to take care of Tony’s family in Avengers: Endgame, he’ll be extending that treatment over to Tony’s surrogate son and we’ll be seeing him as a supporting figure for Peter this time around. He might even take the role of mentor, although Peter will most likely be reluctant to see him that way. Also, if trailers are to be believed, Happy is Aunt May’s new love interest.
The Film Is Set In 2023
This should go without saying (since the people who got snapped came back five years later), but we’ll point it out again: the year will be 2023. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is now officially locked in the future, as bringing the story back to 2018-19 would mean Tony’s daughter was never born, and that just won’t happen.
We can expect Spider-Man: Far From Home to have several references to the year being 2023, and Peter and his classmates technically being 21-22-years-old in age. With such a drastic difference in the timeline, the students jumping from the 2018 school year to 2023 should have some tremendous impact on the story.
The World Will Be Radically Different
Speaking of references to 2023, Spider-Man: Far From Home should go out of its way to show us how different the world is now. We mentioned above the impact that people returning from the snap will make, but it won’t stop there.
The film is set to present us with a world that’s radically different from the 2018 version we saw. Avengers: Endgame already showed us significant differences (with New Asgard being situated in Norway). Add the fact that Peter and his friends are going to be touring Europe and we can expect to see a whole new world in this film.
It Will Introduce A New Direction To The MCU
We’ve become so used to the MCU’s style that it’s hard to believe the story’s really changing, fundamentally. Nevertheless, that’s exactly what’s coming with Spider-Man: Far From Home. With all the Avengers either deceased or gone, this means we’re now going to be set up for a new direction for the series.
There will be no build up toward another Infinity Stone, or a past villain returning. We’ll now be moving forward toward gaining new characters and antagonists. This new direction should set the foundation of the style that will be seen in Phase Four of the MCU (and beyond). Look for characters like the Elementals and Mysterio to be recurring players in the upcoming years, and for Spidey to be set to take the role of a “main” MCU superhero.
