Brace yourselves, people, because it’s time to rejoin The Losers’ Club and bike on over to the eerie little town of Derry once more. As we can see from the recently released trailer for the second chapter of the beloved adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel, this version of the film might just take the cake for being the scariest one yet. Featuring horrific naked old ladies, baths of blood pouring everywhere, and disturbing shots of Pennywise himself, there is no doubt that horror movie buffs will applaud this film for its seemingly epic level of terror.
What is everything we have learned from the It: Chapter 2 trailer so far? Take a look at the list below to find out. (Warning: Spoilers for both the first movie as well as the mini-series).
The Adult Cast
Fans of Stephen King’s horrific masterpiece have been looking forward to the reveal of the adult cast for Chapter 2 since the 2017 film was released. The internet has since created many lists of the desired “dream cast” they hope to play each grown-up version of The Losers’ Club’s most beloved members. Finally, the trailer has revealed to fans who will be playing who, and it’s safe to say we will not be disappointed. The adult cast includes Jessica Chastain (Beverly Marsh), Bill Hader (Richie Tozier), James McAvoy (Bill Denbrough) and Isaiah Mustafa (Mike Hanlon). It seems like there couldn’t be a more fitting choice of actors to play these characters and based on the trailer alone, they do a superb job mastering their roles.
The Previous Cast Will Return
If you fell in love with the talented cast from the 2017 version of It and hope to see their stellar performances come together once more in the town of Derry, you’re in for a treat. Luckily for dedicated fans, the loveable “losers” drenched from head to toe in 80s zeitgeist will be making their return for the second chapter of the film. In the trailer, we see several shots of the original cast members, including a young Beverly as she reads Ben’s “January Embers” poem. We see it with the rest of the original cast for The Losers’ Club as they gaze upon their reflection while in the heart of Derry.
Pennywise Is Back In Derry
Of course, you can’t have an It movie without the scary shape-shifting clown, Pennywise. Fans of the novel know that Pennywise comes back to the town of Derry every 27 years, and often takes on the form of the all of their worst fears. You know, just for kicks. Well, it has been 27 years, and the gang is all grown up. As we can tell from the trailer, Beverly and the others from the Losers’ Club return to the eerie town of which they grew up in. As seen in the first film, the kids take a blood oath to return to their childhood town if “It” ever comes back. Now that the Losers’ Club is older and wiser, will they be able to more swiftly destroy Pennywise for good? It’s hard to tell, considering how, by this point, Pennywise has grown stronger and more sadistic than ever before.
Pennywise Has A Creepy History
As we can see by the trailer, it appears as though Pennywise was originally a man who worked at a circus, fathering the now elderly Mrs. Kersh, who currently lives in Beverly’s childhood home. This family history can be seen in the picture that Beverly stares at in the trailer, but is this the reality of the situation? We have been tricked by Pennywise and his shape-shifting ways many times before.
It’s possible that Mrs. Kersh is actually Pennywise in disguise, but it looks like we will have to wait until the film in September to find out. If Pennywise really is Kersh’s father, we know he used to be a man who worked at the circus, which makes total sense that he would take on the clown form. Finding out more about the creepy clown’s history will help the Losers’ Club ultimately defeat him.
Beverly’s Love Story
“Your hair is winter fire, January embers. My heart burns there, too”.
It looks as though chapter 2 of It won’t shy away from Beverly’s love story as we can see by the trailer when Beverly re-reads the poem Ben had written for her all those years ago. As we know from the 90s miniseries version of Stephen King’s classic novel, Beverly and Ben end up together in the end. He was the one who wrote the January Embers poem for her, even though Beverly believes it to have been Bill who wrote it. Many fans of King’s novel and the mini-series were disappointed with the kiss shared between Beverly and Bill at the end of the 2017 film because the true love story belongs to her relationship with Ben. If the 2019 version of It will commit to the original, it will see Ben and Beverly together.
Major Character Deaths
As fans of the novel and the mini-series know, King isn’t afraid to bring upon some major character deaths amidst the terror unleashed inside the small town of Derry. The trailer hints that this version of the film will be no different when it comes to its major character deaths because, as we can see, the Losers’ Club is getting smaller and smaller in terms of size.
In the trailer, we see all of the members of the Losers’ club staring at their reflection. We then see them as adults, but it is clear that two of the characters are no longer present. True fans know why this is the case, and it’s because of the tragic deaths that will most likely carry out in the second chapter.
The Festival Scene
Because the novel about the horrifying clown taking over the town of Derry is over 1,000 pages long, it’s no surprise that many scenes from the book will be taken out of the film for timing purposes. This was the case for the mini-series as well in which many scenes from the book were not included. But was length and timing the only reason certain moments from the book were taken out of the mini-series, or were there more reasons behind it?
It, the novel, features plenty of extremely controversial scenes that would never make it to ABC television back in the 1990s—or ever. One of these controversial scenes includes a hate crime where a group of bullies attack a gay man during a town festival in Derry. As we can see from the trailer, the festival will occur. It has also been confirmed that this hate crime will occur in the film as we can see by this quote from the film’s writer, Dauberman.
“It is an iconic scene in the book and one we wanted to include in the movie. It is the first attack in present-day Derry and sets the stage for what Derry has become. It is the influence of Pennywise even while he is hibernating, and it’s pure evil what happens… these bullies working through Pennywise was important for us to show.”
Mrs. Kersh
As we can see from the trailer, the character Mrs. Kersh will appear in the 2019 version of the film, scarier than ever. As stated previously, it is unclear whether or not in this version of the film Mrs. Kersh is actually a shapeshifting Pennywise. What we do know from Stephen King’s classic is that Mrs. Kersh was made to replicate the witch from Hansel and Grettle, who happened to be one of Beverly’s biggest fears growing up. Is Mrs. Kersh really Pennywise’s daughter as shown in the trailer, and if so, what does this mean for the haunting clown?
Chinese Restaurant Scene
The trailer reveals the classic Chinese restaurant scene that made it to the 90s mini-series version of King’s novel. In the scene, the characters open up their fortune cookies to find their greatest fears lurking inside. The classic scene at the restaurant made fans of It lose their appetites for fortune cookies pretty much for good because of how scary it was. The restaurant from the trailer looks almost identical to the one from the mini-series, so it makes us wonder how many more scenes will look identical—at least set-wise—to the original TV version.
Scarier Than The First Movie
The trailer alone fills us in on the fact that this version of the film will be much more horrific than the first. Now that time has passed, Pennywise will come back even more horrifying and blood-thirsty than ever before. It is finally time for him to seek revenge on the Losers’ Club.
According to Jessica Chastain who plays the grown-up version of Beverly Marsh, this film will contain more blood than has ever been seen in a horror movie before. More blood than the bathroom scene in the 2017 version of the film?? That doesn’t even seem possible! If this is the case, we are without a doubt certain that this film will be even scarier than the first.
